How are children referred for speech therapy services?
Children in Stokes Co. Schools can be referred for a speech and language evaluation by their parents and/or school staff.
Once the student has been referred, a speech and language screening is conducted to determine whether testing is necessary. After the screening is completed and it has been determined that an evaluation needs to be conducted, the Speech Pathologist will contact the parents to set up a meeting to complete the necessary paperwork.
A comprehensive communication assessment will be conducted and the results will be shared with the parents or guardians. If being found eligible for speech therapy service, the child will be enrolled into therapy by writing an Individual Education Plan (IEP) which sets up the guidelines for addressing the student's communication needs.
